How Do We Know God Exists?
Someone wrote into a recent Billy Graham column asking him “How Do we know God exists?”
Billy said,
“Have you ever thought about all the things we accept by faith every day? When we cross a bridge or sit down in a chair we don’t first take it apart and examine it, we assume it will hold us. Nor do we wait until we fully uderstand electricity before we turn on the lights. We believe even if we don’t fully understand. In a greater way, when we come to God we have every reason to believe not only that He exists, but that He cares about us. We see the evidence all around us in the world He created. But God has shown himself to us in another way: by becoming a man and living among us. You can’t put God in a test tube and “prove” He exists. God is far greater than that.”
Billy’s reply was really good, I thought, especially the line, “You can’t put God in a test tube and “prove” He exists. God is far greater than that.”
Marvin Bittinger pursued his undergraduate studies at Manchester College (B. A., Mathematics, 1963) and graduate studies at The Ohio State University (M. S., Mathematics, 1965) and Purdue University (Ph. D., Mathematics Education, 1968). Dr. Bittinger is the author of over 215 mathematics textbooks ranging in topics from developmental mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to brief calculus. Dr. Bittinger was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy in 1978. His hobbies include baseball, bowling, golf, and hiking in Utah with his sons.
